Breadfruit People
The Breadfruit People is an online community for everything breadfruit. The community brings together growers, consumers, and lovers of breadfruit! As part of the steering committee for the 2026 Breadfruit Celebration, scheduled for September 21 - 25, 2026, in Kona, Hawai‘i, we awill bring together the international community of farmers, researchers, Indigenous knowledge holders, and innovators dedicated to the resurgence of breadfruit. Building on the momentum of seven previous summits—most recently the 2024 gathering in Tonga—our core focus is to uplift and share the knowledge, practices, and suitable application of breadfruit as a life-sustaining resource for building a better world.
The 2026 Breadfruit Celebration is being organized by a steering committee of representatives from three core organizations: Indigenous Cropping Systems Lab at University of Hawai’i, Pacific Farmers Organisations, and Hawai’i ‘Ulu Cooperative. The steering committee is an unincorporated coalition and each of the members contribute their expertise, connections, and resources in collaboration to collectively develop the week-long celebration as well as make programmatic and funding decisions.
Additionally, various program partners and sponsors are contributing through venue hosting, in-kind contributions, and monetary support. The Global Breadfruit Summit portion of the celebration aims to amplify the knowledge, priorities, and lived experience of breadfruit practitioners, researchers, and educators worldwide. Our hope is not only to facilitate the sharing and documentation of knowledge but also to support the development of strong relationships that span across disciplines and regions.
