BCMCR Research Events

We produce distinctive, collaborative research within the field of media and cultural studies.

BCMCR is focused on the principles of interdisciplinarity, critical investigation, collective practice and social activism, along with a commitment to disseminate our research to, and beyond, the academy. Our intellectual project is grounded in a range of concerns in Media and Cultural Studies, and articulated through research in 8 clusters: Creative Industries; Cultural Theory; Game Cultures; Gender & Sexuality; History, Heritage & Archives; Jazz Studies; Media & Place; and Popular Music Studies. These areas of inquiry are nuanced through an annual or biennial research theme selected by centre members, allowing us to be both responsive and reflexive in our work.

BCMCR was founded in November 2009, to offer a coherent space for the development of research in the field of Media and Cultural Studies. This was in part driven by the intention to return work in this area to UoA36 of REF2014. Initially based in the School of Media, the Centre is now hosted by the Birmingham Institute of Media and English (founded in 2019), but draws its membership from a larger pool, including colleagues from other areas including our own own Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, from other faculties – Business, Law and Social Sciences, and Health, Education and Life Sciences – and on occasion from outside the university.

For more information, see https://bcmcr.org/

We welcome visiting researchers from across the world and hold regular research seminars which mix presentations from staff, students and speakers from a range of our collaborative partnerships. Please feel free to contact us if you have a research enquiry.
